Abstract: For my community essay, even before knowing about the essay assignment, just based on the readings from Casey Plett, I was already drawing parallels between the community Plett describes in her work and DRUM NYC. I was thinking of all the things I could talk about, especially about the nuances of a community and I had an outline very early. For the final portfolio, the only changes I really made was introduce my role in the organization earlier, and talk a little about the even that made me realize how large and diverse the community was. If I had more time, I would like to expand more on my definition of a community and how even though DRUM doesn’t perfectly fit the dictionary definition of a “community”, by my definition, it is a community.
Revisions:
From the first workshop to the final portfolio, I definitely made some changes and it was mainly just explaining the nuances within the community in greater detail and adding how even with these differences we find common ground to work with and around each other. I felt like that second part is really important because I wanted to show the supportive nature of DRUM and its members because that’s what makes it a safe space and a community.
